Long Bien Bridge

The church is located at 40 Nha Chung Street and is right on the road and quite accessible. The outside of the church is public space and free so you can have a visit at any time but for inside visit, you can only enter the Cathedral in the opening time of ceremonial practice as the following schedule: Weekday 5:30 am and 6:15 pm/ Saturday 6:00 pm/ Sunday 5:00 am, 7:00 am, 9:00 am, 11:00 am, 4:00 pm, 6:00 pm and 8:00 pm.

SAVOURING VIETNAMESE TRADITIONAL CUISINE IN HANOI

The next part of exploring Hanoi as a local is to enjoy the Vietnamese traditional cuisine. As a local I would love to share with you must –try Vietnamese authentic dishes once traveling in Hanoi.

Pho (Vietnamese flat noodle soup)

Phở Vietnam

The cuisine symbol of Hanoi, Pho is famous to many tourist over the world. The noodles is made from rice, a familiar ingredient of Vietnamese cuisine. The broth is made from stewed cow bones, cinnamon, anise and other spices. So it’s definite to say that you don’t want to miss out this aromatic soup filled with slices of beef or chicken, rice noodles and a plateful of fresh herbs. It is easy for you to find a Pho restaurant in Hanoi from restaurants equipped with air conditioners to street side stalls with only some plastic chairs.

Recommendation: Pho Bat Dan

Address: 49 Bat Dan Street, Hoan Kiem District, Hanoi

Business hours: 6:00 – 10:00 and 18:00 – 20:30

Bun cha (Hanoi rice vermicelli with grilled pork)

Bun Cha

One of my favorite Vietnamese dish is Hanoi rice vermicelli with grilled pork, also known as Bun cha Hanoi. It is a tasty dish made from rice noodle separated from chargrilled pork and sliced fatty pork. Bun cha typically comes with a plate of fresh herbs and a small bowl of sweet fish sauce with pickled slices of carrot and papaya. The way to savour totally the traditional taste of this dish is picking up some noodles with chopsticks, dipping it in the sauce and then eating it with pork and Vietnamese herbs.

There’s a recommendation for Bun cha is Huong Lien Restaurant where President Barack Obama enjoyed the delicious local dish with famous chef Antony Bourdain.

Address: 24 Le Van Huu Street, Hai Ba Trung District, Hanoi

Business hours: 8:00 – 21:00

Bun rieu cua (Crab noodle soup)

Crab noodle soup

Bun rieu cua is a popular dish to all locals across Vietnam, but it is believed to originate from the North then spread to Central and South. The northern version of the dish is ‘more simple’ but delicious. A bowl of Bun rieu cua has main components: crab paste, broth, noodle and meatball, which is served with broth, tofu puffs, banana bulb, bean sprouts, etc. If you are a big fan of seafood, don’t forget to try this tasty local delicacy as visiting Hanoi.

Recommendation: Bun rieu cua Hang Bac

Address: 11A Hang Bac, Hoan Kiem District, Hanoi

Business hours: 6:00 – 18:00

Hanoi Shrimp pancake (Banh tom Hanoi)

Banh Tom

An essence of Hanoi street food, Banh tom is popularly known as a simple but passionate dish to many locals as well as tourists. The crispy deep fried shrimp pancake is the combination of wheat flour, tapioca flour, turmeric powder, potatoes and fresh shrimps. The plateful of shrimp pancake is usually served with rice paper, herbs and a bowl of sweet fish sauce with pickle slices of papaya and carrot.

Recommendation: Banh tom Ho Tay

Address: 01 Thanh Nien Street, Ba Dinh District, Hanoi

Business hours: 9:00 – 21:00

Vietnamese Egg Coffee

Egg Coffee

Your Hanoi food tour will be not perfect if you miss out Vietnamese Egg coffee – one of the most famous coffee in the north of Vietnam. This Vietnamese Egg Coffee is basically made by whipping raw egg yolks with sweetened condensed milk placed on top of the more traditional strong Vietnam drip coffee. If you want to try this Vietnamese cappuccino, my recommendation is Cafe Giang at 39 Nguyen Huu Huan Street, Hoan Kiem District; the coffee shop’s opening hours are 7:00 to 22:30.

VISITING LOCAL ATTRACTIONS TO FEEL THE PACE OF LIFE IN HANOI

Visiting local attractions to enjoy the Hanoi pace of life is an experience you cannot miss out. With the experiences of a local, these suggestion below will give you unforgettable memories in Vietnam.

Dong Xuan Market

Dong Xuan Market

You are looking to shop around in Hanoi, Dong Xuan Market is a nice place to checkout. Located at Dong Xuan Street, Dong Xuan Market is the oldest and largest market in Hanoi. The market offers an array of goods from local foods, souvenirs, clothing, and so on. One tip is you need to bargain here in order to get a good price. There is also a massive dining area within Dong Xuan Market, with food vendors selling Vietnamese coffee and local dishes.

Hanoi is a cultural city that is home to some of the most interesting museums in the country. These museums will give you an insight into the rich history of Vietnam. They will educate you about local life but also the wars and colonization that this country has endured. Our guide to the most interesting museums in Hanoi will help you decide which museums you want to visit.

1. Hoa Lo Prison

The Hoa Lo Prison featured prominently throughout Vietnam’s French colonization and the American War. It was nicknamed the ‘Hanoi Hilton’ by the American’s imprisoned there. It was built in 1896 and used to house Vietnamese revolutionaries and later, American prisoners of war. Famously, it is where John McCain (US politician) was imprisoned, where you can still see his parachute suit.

The museum shows the gruesome side to the French colonization in the form of the guillotine that was used to execute a number of Vietnamese revolutionaries. Although there is a very interesting section focusing on the American war and its prisoners, the museum’s main focus is the war with the French. Hoa Lo Prison is definitely one of the most interesting museums in Hanoi.

2. Vietnam Women’s Museum

People often rave about the Vietnam Women’s Museum and we can see why. This museum focuses on the role of women throughout history and culture. It showcases traditional clothing from the general Vietnamese public but also from ethnic minority groups. The dialogue is presented in both English and French and focuses on an array of different era’s and occupations of women, from rice paddy workers to prominent business women. There are three different sections: Women in history, women in family and women’s fashion throughout the ages. Besides the beautiful clothing, you can also see propaganda posters and stunning artifacts used by Vietnamese women. Better yet, be guided through the museum by one of our local lady bikers on our City Tour.

3. Vietnam Museum of Ethnology

In an effort to preserve the various cultures that make up Vietnam, the museum showcases 54 different ethnic groups. The museum is home to important artifacts relating to various religious and cultural practices throughout Vietnam. In a country where there are so many minority ethnic groups, a museum such as this is important in preserving their differences. In addition to the various artifacts, the museum also has a research center, library and an auditorium. Furthermore, the museum also showcases the different architectural styles of the ethnic minorities in a real life scale. If you are interested in seeing Vietnam in a broader light, this is definitely one of the most interesting museums in Hanoi.

4. Vietnam Fine Arts Museum

The Vietnam Fine Arts Museum is housed in a building that was once used by the French Ministry of Information. The museum showcases modern and ancient art such as Champa stone carvings and sculptures of the Quan Am, the Goddess of Compassion. The numerous pieces on display are ordered from bottom to top in chronological order and give you a glimpse into the modern day and historical Vietnam. Although the exhibits often have English translations, it is often useful to hire a guide to get the full experience.

5. Vietnam Military History Museum

If you are a history buff or want to learn more about Vietnam’s rich history, especially with regards to the various wars, the the Vietnam Military History Museum will be one of the most interesting museums in Hanoi for you. It is home to a number of military aircraft’s and machinery used during the wars. Additionally, you can read first-hand accounts from former soldiers who put their lives on the line for their country. Some of the most noteworthy artifacts are an American B-52 Bomber aircraft remains and a M107 self-propelled gun.

6. Ho Chi Minh Museum

Ho Chi Minh, affectionately known as Uncle Ho, is possibly the most prominent and loved political figure in Vietnam’s recent political history. The museum is located in the same complex as the Ho Chi Mausoleum, where you can see his embalmed body. The museum is dedicated to his life and showcases this in chronological order from his upbringing to his death. The descriptions are in French and English but if you are really interested, hire a guide to learn more.

Vietnam has a rich history and a beautiful culture. If you plan to travel to mostly only cities, we recommend visiting these museums to get a glimpse into Vietnamese life outside the cities. Furthermore, by supporting these museums, you support the preservation of ethnic minorities and the cultures.

Hanoi is a bustling city with so much to do and see. Yet, sometimes people miss some of the best things Hanoi has to offer whilst ticking off all the major tourist attractions. Here is a list of the best hidden places in Hanoi you may not know and are definitely worth a visit!

1. Phung Hung Art Project

The Phung Hung Art Project is a collaboration between Vietnamese and South Korean artists in celebration of 25 years of diplomatic relations. These beautiful paintings leading up to the famous Long Bien Bridge depict traditional and modern life in Vietnam. The aim of the project is to create a space for locals and tourists to enjoy. These beautiful pieces of art have revived a once dull looking wall on the outskirts of the bustling Old Quarter into a vibrant and interactive attraction.

Hanoi is a fascinating city that we urge travelers not to miss! This list of the best places in Hanoi you may not know will guide you to having a more interesting and fun trip.

2. Quang Ba Flower Market

Away from the tourist hub of the Hanoi Old Quarter, you’ll find an area called Tay Ho. This area tends to attract all the expat teachers living in Hanoi. However, right in the center of Tay Ho, you can find the bustling wholesale flower market, where majority of Hanoi flower sellers source their produce. However, there is a catch to experiencing this market in all its glory. The flower market is actually pretty quiet during the day but is most active and vibrant in the early hours of the morning, before the sun rises. Between 2am and 5am, where cyclists and motorbikes line up along Au Co to snatch up the lushest and freshest blooms.

Hanoi is a fascinating city that we urge travelers not to miss! This list of the best places in Hanoi you may not know will guide you to having a more interesting and fun trip.

3. Truc Bach

Truc Bach is a quiet area right next door to the bustling Old Quarter. The Old Quarter is known to be the best place to view the mixture between the French colonial buildings and the Vietnamese culture. However, Truc Bach is the perfect setting to do the same but with less people, bikes and chaos. Additionally, the bright and beautiful Cua Bac Church can be found in Truc Bach, which can be found at 56 Phan Đình Phùng. As you step outside the church gates, you’ll find yourself on a road lined with beautiful old trees and traditional French buildings. Additionally, the Trac Bach Lake has great relevance within the Vietnamese War, which you can read all about in the Hoa Lo Prison.

8. Street Art

Hanoi isn’t exactly known for its street art but you’ll be pleasantly surprised to know that there are some beautiful pieces of street art around the city, often in places you don’t expect. As you take a stroll along the railway tracks on Train Street, you’ll find some very interesting pieces dotted between the various cafes. Yen Phu Street is home to a beautiful piece of a young woman and you can also find another piece along the road adjacent to Truc Bach Lake, named Truc Bach Street.

At that time, visiting a museum is the most likely choice. There are lots of museums in Hanoi where you have an opportunity to learn about Vietnam’s rich culture and history while escaping daytime downpours during your journey such as Vietnam Mseum of Ethnology , Vietnam Women’s Museum, Hanoi Museum. Tickets are priced about 20000 VND or 25000 per person, depending on the museum you chose.
           Hanoi Museum

DROP BY LOCAL ART SCENE

Another place you can not ignore in rainy season is the Local Art Scene. It has no shortage of art galleries and handicraft centre, located in Trang Tien Street in Old Quarter. A popular art gallery is Thanh Binh gallery, which has Vietnam’s respected modern artists as well as a range of lacquerware paintings. You can learn from the life and history in Hanoi through the paintings. Let the rain be outdoor and enjoy the works of art. This destination is for those who love art and prefer peacefulness.

EXPLORE BAT TRANG POTTERY VILLAGE

One of the top things to do in Hanoi in rainy season is exploring Bat Trang Pottery village. Hanoi is famous for many, traditional craft villages especially for Bat Trang pottery village- an attraction that you should not miss during your stay in Hanoi . You will have a chance to visit local pottery market and get interesting experience in otter-making workshop to directly make your own ceramic products. This is the best way to explore the slow pace of life in Hanoi between the crowded street. Spending time to Bat Trang village will bring you an unforgettable memory after you leave Hanoi.

Their style and elegance define Anarkali suits. They are a popular choice of traditional wear for all occasions because they remain comfortable while making a style statement. They are extremely easy to wear and can still get you the appreciation you would get after wearing a more traditional lehenga or draping the quintessential saree. Though traditional, these are not limited to festive occasions. They can look great even during a casual gathering of friends with equal ease.

Women choose an Anarkali over the variety of traditional wear for reasons that set them apart. What is it that makes them so popular?

Simple and Adaptable

An Anarkali suit, while being traditional, does not feel imposing. Its simplicity holds most of its charm. It can be made suitable for different occasions by making simple alterations to the accompanying bottoms and replacing the dupatta with a scarf. The dress can be transformed from a highly traditional outfit to one suitable for a casual or formal gathering.

Elegant

The cut of an Anarkali is such that it makes everyone who wears it look elegant. Depending on your body shape and height, you can pair it with churidars, palazzos, and even long skirts for a graceful appearance. How you accessorize, it also contributes to the overall look.

Comfortable

Most traditional clothes require a certain amount of effort and attention to carry them well. While a saree involves skill and patience for draping it gracefully, lehengas demand constant poise to make them look gorgeous. In contrast, an Anarkali is straightforward to wear and carry gracefully. The only effort involved is in making a choice. Since they all look so beautiful, choosing one can be difficult.

Variety

They are available in many styles. You can get a variety of Anarkali suits ranging from simply elegant to lavishly opulent. The colors can also vary from simple pastels to dark as well as bright colors. They look good in absolutely all possible colors. The styling depends a lot on the pairing you choose. An embellished dupatta and ethnic jewelry can transform a simple Anarkali to a festive outfit. Similarly, a pair of trousers and a scarf can tone down a dress many degrees to make it suitable for non-festive occasions.

Let’s look at some available options to buy designer Anarkali suits online.

General E-Commerce Portals

These include portals that sell clothes along with a variety of other products. They do not specialise in clothes but could have designer labels as partners willing to use their services to market their work. These can market clothes that are mass-produced for bulk sales.

Fashion E-Commerce

These portals focus on fashion wear and accessories to go with them. They are more specialised than general e-commerce and have associations with many fashion brands. While some products are mass-marketed, the designer pieces are limited in numbers.

Designer Labels Online

If you want to buy pure designer wear customized for you and you alone, you need to shop now on these specialized websites for designer clothes. Here you can get special attention and a product that you will love. You can get a complete outfit designed on these websites with no scope of negligence. You can also choose this option to ensure that the Anarkali suit you pick does not get limited to a one-time use by adding on options for pairing it differently for other occasions.

So, suppose you want a dress that is traditional, stylish, festive, dressy, elegant or even simple. In that case, you can take your pick from the various options and buy designer Anarkali suits online from the outlet of your choice.

3. Pho Suong

This is one of the pho restaurants that contribute to the brand “Pho Hanoi” of Vietnam. Pho is sold here very delicious: The broth has a strong, clear, and sweet flavor, the beef is soft and not too chewy, makes those who come here to eat Pho feel “happy= suong.” Like the name of the restaurant. Also, Pho Suong has the advantage of being the most spacious and airy noodle shop in the list of 7 best pho in Hanoi.

Address: 36B Mai Hac De, Hai ba Trung District, Hanoi

4. Pho Thin

Amazing, fantastic, and delicious noodles come to mind when locals and travelers come to Pho Thin. While the atmosphere exhibits the vibrant culture of local Hanoi, the price per bowl of pho here is very reasonable. It may take you a little longer to get here, but it is definitely worth it. Don’t miss this jewel!

Hanoi is the capital of Vietnam. This is a place that is considered to be the most visited cites and there is a multicultural and traveler-friendly atmosphere.

Ho Chi Minh mouselum

Customs and etiquette

The people here are still very traditional, especially regarding dress. Travelers should dress conservatively when exploring the city, especially around temples and in the Old Quarter.

Money

The official currency of Vietnam is the dong (VN) and can be used for all purchases. US dollars are also widely accepted and can be used throughout the city, with the current exchange rate being 18000 dong to USD$1. There are a good number of ATMs located around Hanoi and these machines issue dong notes. The main banks that change traveler’s checks in US dollars are ANZ Bank, Industrial & Commercial Bank, and Vietcombank, and credit cards are accepted in major hotels and restaurants.

Weather

Hanoi experiences four distinct seasons and while temperatures often drop to 15°C in the winter, the summer months are hot and humid and can reach 40°C. Perhaps the best time to Visit here is during the spring, which lasts from March to April as the weather is cool and dry. However, foreigners also visit Vietnam in summer because they want to have tanned skin. The weather is also pleasant from October to December, although Hanoi can get rather crowded at the end of the year and hotel prices rise dramatically.

Spring in Ha Noi

Transportation

Traveling by taxi is by far the most convenient way to travel around the city, although this can be rather expensive, and local cyclos are a cheaper way to complete short journeys.

There is a good selection of transport available from Hanoi Noi Bai Airport (HAN) with the Hanoi Bus company taking passengers from the airport and on routes around the city. Those who plan to travel independently can also make use of detailed maps, which are available free online and at the main tourist information office.

In Hanoi, you will see everything – in-one city inspires you with thousands of Hanoi street photography ideas.

Beyond what you’ve seen on the internet, the authentic Hanoi features its own beauty in every street corner. It’s best to collect moments of your exploration of the Hanoian life through memorable photos. Then, if you’re a keen photographer, take a look at 6 must-visit places to capture the most awe-inspiring street photos of Hanoi.

- Hanoi Train street

The highlights of Hanoi Train Street lie at the intersection between the North-South railway and some striking streets, including Tran Phu, Phung Hung, Kham Thien, and Le Duan Street. Rising popular from Instagram posts, distinctive images of Hanoi Train Street surrounded by residential buildings will amaze you with organized chaos. It’s surprising how the locals could risk their lives with frequent passing trains every day. The daily activities are engaged in the railways in the middle of the train street and two narrow sides offering kids’ playgrounds and culinary places.

- Long Bien Bridge

Constructed between 1899 and 1902 by the father of the Eiffel Tower, Long Bien bridge is not only a historic witness but also a charming attraction to get deeper insights into Hanoi. The fresh air and panoramic overview will give you the most wonderful photo shooting than ever.

A long walk in both sides offers plenty of local concepts like the tranquil Red River and seasonal flower gardens on one side; and the vibrant wholesale market on the other. It’s greatest to come there at sunset or sunrise, wander around the railways and take catchy photos of the authentic Hanoi life.

- Phung Hung Mural Street

Phung Hung Mural Street is established under a contemporary art project of Vietnam and South Korea. There are wall paintings that recall memories of Hanoi old features such as Hang Ma Street, Mid-Autumn Festival, the ancient Trang Tien Department Store, Long Bien Bridge, street images of flower vendors, a schoolgirl on her way to school, and other more.

- Hanoi West Lake

Known as the largest freshwater lake of Hanoi, West Lake has a perimeter of 17km and covers an area of 500 hectares. This is a landmark visitors usually come for historic interests, peaceful scenery and splendid hotels and restaurants nearby. Despite its lively nightlife, the best time to capture the beauty of West Lake is at breaking dawn or twilight. The sunset and sunrise moments offer the most stunning photographs of West Lake, where you can take daily photos of the locals doing exercise or taking a stroll around the lakeside.

- Hanoi Old Quarter

Hanoi Old Quarter is a convergence of the finest belonging to a one-thousand-year-old capital city. Set the luxury buildings and skyscrapers aside, you’ll find the treasured value in ancient tiny houses, street vendors, Hanoi specialties, and vibrant walking streets.

Hanoi Old Quarter inspires photographers with plenty of iconic beauty spots such as Hoan Kiem Lake, Dong Kinh Nghia Thuc Square, Dong Xuan Market, and beautiful streets like Ta Hien, Hang Ma, etc. Each sight has its own charm that has drawn thousands of tourists’ attractions.

- Quang Ba Flower Market

Unlike the graceful flower shops in Western cities, Quang Ba flower market has its own hectic, bustling atmosphere and a beautiful balance of beauty and craziness. The morning market welcomes visitors from midnight to around 6am, but most people miss out on the liveliest time between 2am and 4am.

Come discover the authentic Asia market and get the uniquely memorable things to do in Hanoi. Not only business, but Quang Ba flower market also features a way of life and a community indicating the most wonderful and buzzing experience in Hanoi.

Here are some suggested inspirational ideas to take the most appealing street photos in Hanoi. Let’s pack your camera and you’re eager for authentic photography experience.

Hanoi – the capital of Vietnam – has long become a favorite destination among both domestic and international travelers. Hanoi’s character is inseparable from its weather. But even on a sunny day or on a rainy day, Hanoi still beautiful in the eyes of travelers.

If you stay in Hanoi in rainy days and don’t want to spend whole day at the hotel, there are many options for you to discover Hanoi.

1. Make your way to a museum.

An unexpected rain shower is an opportunity to learn more about Vietnam’s rich culture and history. There are plenty of museums in Hanoi while escaping daytime downpours during your holiday. Home to unique artifacts and photographs, detailed (and often harrowing) stories and local artworks, must-visits include the Vietnam Museum of Ethnology, Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum and Vietnam Women’s Museum.

2. Explore the local Art Scene

Hanoi has no shortage of art galleries and handicraft centers, most of which are conveniently located along Trang Tien Street in Old Quar. Visitors can browse works by some of the country’s best painters and up – and – coming artists in galleries on Hang Bong Street or Hang Bac Street where you can find decades-old shops selling silver jewelry, such as rings, necklaces, and bracelets.

3. Watch a Puppet theatre

Thang Long Water Puppet Theatre is considered to be one of the cultural highlights of Northern Vietnam, dating back to a tradition that first started in the Red River Delta. Shows at this modern theatre are performed in a pool of water as the stage for the puppets, which are controlled by puppeteers hiding behind a bamboo screen.

4. Spend the day at Shopping Mall

Open daily, shopping malls in Hanoi are great options for when you need to escape the downpours (or afternoon heat), catch the latest Hollywood films and shop for internationally-renowned brands. While narrow shophouses, outdoor markets, and handicrafts outlets are plentiful in downtown Hanoi, contemporary shopping malls are gaining massive popularity among affluent locals and tourists for offering a wide array of dining, shopping, and entertainment options under one roof.
