Thang Long water puppet theatre
Thang Long water puppet theatre was established on October 1969 under the name of Kim Dong puppet association with 9 actors. Until now, having passed 38 years of building and developing, Thang Long puppet theatre owns 2 performance teams, 22 main actors, 15 musicians, and five well- trained technicians.
This kind of special art appeared in Vietnam in late 11 century and early 12 century under Ly dynasty. Puppet stage was almost in water condition and performance took place basing on folk performance.
Vietnamese people usually perform water puppet on occasion of traditional New Year holiday and other traditional festivals. However, nowadays, at any day in year, you are able to enjoy special puppet performance at Thang Long water puppet theatre.
Thang Long Water Puppet has toured the art of water puppetry in many countries around the world such as USA, Japan, Switzerland, etc. The tour has significantly contributed to promote water puppetry as well as images of Vietnam to international friends.
Thang Long Water Puppet Theater is almost always fully booked. During peak season, the theater has to organize 7 performances to meet requirement of about 1,800 spectators. The majority of visitors come to the theater are foreign tourists, who prefer to learn about Vietnam’s traditional culture.
Mr. Chiristoph Giebel, an American tourist, said: “I watched water puppet of Vietnam many times and of course I still want to come back here to see more. The ticket price is quite reasonable for all audiences. The highest price for a performance is VND 40,000 and the lowest fare VND 20,000. The theatre offers 50% discount for children.
