What is the Vietnamese Egg Coffee?

 Think coffee with sugar, sweetened condensed milk with egg yolks whisked in. It might be hard to imagine, but strangely enough, the egg yolks actually start tasting like soft and creamy meringue in your coffee, even though meringue is made of egg whites… somehow it just works?

Coffee was first introduced to Vietnam in the 19th century by the French colonists. Vietnam increasingly becomes a strong coffee exporter with many plantations in the central highlands.

To tackle the limitations of fresh milk, the French and Vietnamese started to use sweetened condensed milk with a dark roasted coffee.

Egg coffee has been invented since the 1940s when a bartender called Nguyen Van Giang in Sofitel Legend Metropole Hotel, Hanoi whisked eggs into his coffee as he couldn’t find fresh milk.

When it comes to egg coffee in Hanoi, Giang Cafe is the first place that comes to mind. Giang Cafe serve arguably the best egg coffee in Hanoi. Giang Cafe was founded in 1946 by Mr Nguyen Giang, who created egg coffee when milk was scarce, replacing the milk with the egg yolk. Having egg coffee at Giang Cafe is an experience in itself. You will only see a sign above a small alleyway, which you need to walk down to the end where the cafe will open up.

There’s something special about walking into a normal looking silk store, then walking further with still no sign of a coffee shop then walking upstairs to a coffee shop that suddenly opens up to have this stunning view over Hoan Kiem Lake.
