Vietnam Fine Arts Museum is one of the most important museums in terms of preserving fine arts monuments of Vietnamese ethnic groups.
This building was built by the French in 30s of 20 century and used for daughters of French officers who were from Indochina countries came to Hanoi for their study. In 1962, Vietnamese government handles it to Ministry of culture for adding decoration of Vietnamese Village Communal House beside model of West architecture and turned it into a museum for showing Vietnamese fine arts productions. In 1966, Vietnam Fine Arts Museum officially came into operation with area of 4,200 squares meters and exhibition area of 1,200 square meters and between 1997-1999, total area was expanded up to 4,200 square meters.
Vietnam Fine Arts Museum now preserves more than 18,000 artifacts embodied Vietnam fine arts from prehistory up to now.
Number of famous Vietnamese artists who had their products were collected as: Nguyen Gia Tri, To Ngoc Van, Tran Van Can, Nguyen Phan Chanh, Luong Xuan Nhi, etc.
According to Nora Taylor, specialist of Vietnamese painting in Art Institute of Chicago, Plenty of gathered products in Museum are copies because originals were bought or maybe lost. During Vietnam War, originals were moved to safe places but after war, many of them did not come back.
