The Vietnam Museum of Ethnology is a museum in Hanoi, Vietnam, which focuses on the 54 officially recognized ethnic groups in Vietnam. It is located on a 3.27-acre property on Nguyen Van Huyen Street, Cau Giay District, about 8 km from the city center.
It is widely considered to be the finest modern museum in Vietnam and a tourist attraction in Hanoi.
Museum stores and displays many cultural artifacts of the 54 ethnic groups in Vietnam including 15,000 artifacts, 42,000 movies (with color photos), 2190 positive films, 273 audiotapes of interviews, music, 373 video tapes and 25 CD-Rom ( by 2000). The objects are classified according to many different criteria such as ethnicity, utility, clothing, jewelry, farming tools, fishing tools, weapons, household utensils, musical instruments, religious-belief, wedding, funerals and other spiritual and social activities.
Showroom is frequently located in “bronze drum” block introducing all 54 ethnic groups in Vietnam. There are many common objects in daily life activities of the people. Especially a variety of national fabric costume as loin-cloth, skirt, scarf … be decorated with different traditional techniques, knitting, especially the kind of baskets, trays, instruments with bamboo, calabashes; ritual artifacts … Along with objects, galleries includes documentary films reflecting all aspects of material and intangible culture, traits in the life and creativity of the human race.
To serve visitors as their best, all the information and article notes in the exhibition are written in 3 languages: Vietnamese, English and French. The museum also drafted many leaflets introducing the main contents in Vietnamese, English, French, Chinese, German, Japanese, etc. distributed free to visitors.
