Where to Eat Bun Cha in Hanoi

Vietnamese cuisine varies by region. Each city, even each village, may have its own list of unique local specialties. Let’s go with us to start with the capital city of Hanoi.

Normally, most restaurants in Vietnam specialize in making just one dish. In Hanoi, there are many dishes which attract the tourists. While Bun Cha is a popular meal for lunch, some restaurants serve it all-day long. For great Bun Cha local experiences, here are some exceptional places to check out in Hanoi.

Bún Chả Hương Liên

Already popular, this restaurant gained worldwide acclaim when President Obama and Anthony Bourdain ate Bún chả together.  To capitalize on this fame, Bún Chả Hương Liên restaurant added the name “Obama” to the link of their Facebook page.

Although the walls are now covered with Obama’s pictures, the cuisine remains the same – – local, authentic and delicious. This is one of the best bún chả restaurants in town.

The pork balls are slightly fatty, incredibly juicy and tasty. Fresh herbs, noodles dipped into the special sauce, makes for an incredible harmony of flavors.

Hùng Lẩu

The second restaurant was actually where we had our very first lunch in Hanoi. It is a very local joint where no-one speaks English.

With no one speaking English and the menu in Vietnamese, the foreigners will feel a little lost. Tourists will share a table with local office workers on their lunch break. And with broken English, gestures and facial expressions, they made themselves understood and they helped with order lunch.

Bun cha Dac Kim

Located right on the beginning of Hang Manh street, bun cha Dac Kim has been a familiar destination for many foreign tourists visiting Hanoi. With the area of quite small, at peak time, eaters have to move to the second floor of the restaurant or sit right on chairs on the street pavement.

Bun cha Bach Mai grilled on bamboo stick

Let’s go to Lane 123 Bach Mai street to enjoy a very special bun cha, not only by its special flavor but also by its “delay” serving. Call “delay” serving because you need a lot of time to wait for cha to be grilled well on charcoal and have to wait until your turn.
